Solar Fraud Recoveries: Millions in Consumer Relief and What They Mean for Homeowners
By Attorney Cedric D. Pitts Jr. | United Homeowners Advocate
Homeowners have reported promises of lower bills, affordable financing, tax benefits, and systems that would pay for themselves. Some instead found themselves trapped in expensive financing agreements.
When regulators and courts hold companies accountable, relief can include consumer payments, changed business practices, and legal remedies—but enforcement results do not automatically determine an individual homeowner’s case.
A $3 Million Consumer Relief Settlement
Regulators alleged that Ygrene Energy Fund and participating contractors used deceptive financing practices involving PACE programs, including misleading statements about selling or refinancing homes, aggressive sales practices, and liens imposed without adequate consent.
The settlement required $3 million for specified consumer relief, and in July 2025 the FTC announced distribution of more than $2.9 million. This was an enforcement settlement, not a jury verdict or automatic elimination of every lien.
New York City Seeks Approximately $18 Million in Restitution
In 2026, New York City announced litigation against Radiant Solar and its operator, alleging deceptive sales, undisclosed financing, dealer fees, and defective or incomplete installations. The city sought approximately $18 million in restitution and at least $1.75 million in civil penalties.
Requested relief is not money already awarded. Filing a lawsuit is not the same as proving allegations or obtaining a judgment.
Why the Lender’s Role Matters
A solar transaction may involve a salesperson, installer, and financing company. An investigation may examine whether a lender knew of deceptive practices, participated in the transaction, made its own misrepresentations, or became subject to preserved consumer claims and defenses.
Why Homeowners Should Act
Potential recovery depends on the loan balance, payments, undisclosed charges, repairs, damages, statutory remedies, and available claims. Preserve the sales proposal, financing agreement, signature records, payment history, utility bills, and communications.
United Homeowners Advocate examines the entire transaction. Request a Solar Financing Review. Attorney Advertising. Government enforcement actions do not establish entitlement to recovery in an individual case.
